Broch in Lewis
This is one of the best preserved of all brochs and a part of the wall still stands to a height of 30' and illustrates clearly the technique of building the outer and inner wall faces with a median gallery.
The wall is 11' thick surrounding a 25' diameter courtyard. The doorway on the NW side is still substantially intact and there is a guard cell which is entered through the S wall of the entrance passage. There are 3 other chambers within the thickness of the wall one of which gives access to a stair leading to the galleries. The scarcement is 7' above the ground and is formed by the corbelling of the lower part of the wall.
