SandyG visited on 19th Sep 2017 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 4 The nearest car parking is available at NZ 65234 07401. From here follow the road up the steep hill to NZ 65753 06988 and then follow the track to the row.
There is a slight chance that this represents the marking out for a cross dyke, but the fact that only a very short length of ditch survives means that it is much more likely to represent a stone row.
Gps reading given is of the stone in the alignment with the cross carved on it at NZ 66063 07113
This alignment is covered in Historic England'slist entry number 1018990which also covers all the other features on Crown End and full details can be found there. Basically it describes it as a 70m long alignment of upright stones , located on a cross dyke running north south on the northern side of the rigg. It also says that it lines up with a lone standing stone on the south of the rig (grid ref from gps NZ 66075 06994) suggesting an original intention to continue the dyke to the southern side of the rigg.
Frank Elgee in his 1930 book “Early Man in North Yorkshire” stays that Local Folklore talks about many ancient battles being fought in this area.
Update September 2019: This probable stone row is featured on the Stone Rows of Great Britain's website - see their entry for Crown End, Westerdale Moor, which includes a description, photographs of the alignment and of the individual stones, a plan of the row from a recent survey carried out in September 2017.
Some details can also be found in Pastscape Monument No. 27838 (Crown End Prehistoric Settlement).
