The barrows are all round barrows and are located on a line along the edge of the terrace oriented from north-east to south-west. The largest barrows are the five most to the north. Two small round barrows called "småhaugane" are located to the south of the cemetery. Close to the site is a small footpath leading up to the cemetery. There were originally several more barrows than the 10 remaining ones. These have been lost over the years mostly to ploughing. The barrows are covered mostly with grass and a few trees and the vegetation is regularly cut to make them visible. The barrows are from 18 to 25 metres in diameter.
5 of the 10 barrows have been excavated and later reconstructed and the findings are individually described on the information poster. I will describe them all in from north to south:
Barrow One is a beautiful round barrow, it is 18 metres in diameter and around 1,75m in height. It has never been excavated. It is called "nedstehaugen" (The lower barrow).
Barrow Two is called "Storehaugen". it is 30 metres in diameter and 3 metres in height. In it was found the burial of a female. She was found in a stone coffin with some glass beads, bronze belt buckle and a decorated clay pot.
Barrow Three was also a round barrow, 20 metres in diameter and 3 metres in height. It was found glass beads and a decorated green glass goblet dated to around 300AD and arrowheads and spearheads. It had probably contained the burials of both males and females from around 400AD.
Barrow number Four has never been excavated. It is another beautiful round barrow around 20 metres in diameter and 2,5 metres in height. It is called "Vetlehaugen"
Barrow number Five was called "Dansehaugen" (The dancing barrow). It contained a burned burial from around 300AD. in a round burial chamber made of large stone slabs was found burned bones, bear claws, arrowheads, a comb and some smaller artefacts. Around the inside of the barrow along the north edge was a 12 metre long stone fence.
Barrow Six is another beautiful round barrow. it is 25 metres in diameter and around 3 metres in height. It contained no less than three separate burials. First time was a female wrapped in a carpet in a stone burial chamber buried with several pieces of jewellery and smaller tools. The second burial was of two men, they were found in the same burial chamber as the woman and the woman and her grave goods were moved to one side, they were both burned along with spear tips, arrowheads and a number of bear claws. The third burial was an unburned man buried with arrowheads and a belt buckle.
Barrow number Seven is around 18 metres in diameter and 2 metres in height, it a female burial from around 300AD. She was burned along with bear claws and gaming pieces and some bronze objects. The second was of a man buried in a boat with a complete weapon kit and some farming tools. This is the only boat burial at Hove.
Barrow number Eight is around 18 metres in diameter and around 2 metres in height. It is the only barrow overgrown with taller vegetation. It has never been excavated.
To the south are two smaller round barrows, around 12-13 metres in diameter and around 1 to 1,5 metres in height.
The Moahaugene cemetery have mainly been in use in the age of migration, around 300 to 500 AD but some burials are from late 900s, almost until Christian burial rites replaced the old ones.
