Linear Earthwork in Dorset
This earthwork together with Grim's Ditch defines the Hampshire/Dorset border for many miles. It is thought to have originated in the Bronze Age or Early Iron
Age and was an important political and cultural boundary which divided areas
showing markedly different patterns of land division. Once established, the
dyke continued in use but was remodelled and adapted to suit the needs of
later periods: these included the more defensive requirements of the later
Iron Age and Roman periods. [source]
Access The Bokerley Dyke extends along the edge of the Martin Down National Nature Reserve from Blagdon Hill, ending approximately midway between Woodyates and Cobley. The most convenient parking is at the nature reserve car park (grid ref SU037201) just off the A354 at Bokerley Junction where the road cuts through the bank.

Bokerley Dyke submitted by JimChampion Straight section of Bokerley Dyke on the edge of Martin Down, with Dorset to the left and Hampshire to the right. Animal burrowing has thrown up white chalk to the surface, showing what is beneath the grass. Some scrub has been mechanically removed from the dyke and it is kept free of scrub by grazing.
Bokerley Dyke submitted by JimChampion The land to the left of the dyke is Martin Down national nature reserve, with the area in the foreground currently being grazed by sheep. The ditch is in the shadow of the bank as it snakes its way up Blagdon Hill.
Bokerley Dyke submitted by JimChampion The Bokerley Dyke bank on Martin Down, with Dorset on the right and Hampshire on the left. The route of the earthwork is sinuous - it bends to the right, then the left and so on up Blagdon Hill. The white/orange post on the bank marks a subterranean gas pipeline.
Bokerley Dyke submitted by JimChampion View north along Bokerley Dyke, with Dorset on the left and Hampshire on the right. The ditch is on the other side of the bank. The field on the left contains the ploughed-down Pentridge 3 long barrow.
Bokerley Dyke submitted by JimChampion View towards Blagdon Hill from the 20th century rifle range butt on Martin Down. The Bokerley Dyke winds its way along and up the hill, marking the present day Hampshire/Dorset border. The ditch is on the left had side (Hampshire side), in shadow, originally intended to keep the Saxon invaders out of north Dorset.
Bokerley Dyke submitted by JimChampion View north-west along Bokerley Dyke, with Dorset on the left and Hampshire on the right. The long mound in the distance, on the Hampshire side of the dyke, is a 20th century rifle range butt. The Pentridge 2 and 3 long barrows are in the field on the left.
Bokerley Dyke submitted by JimChampion Bokerley Dyke on Martin Down, cleared of scrub but with posts intact. In the distance the earthwork ascends Blagdon Hill.
Bokerley Dyke submitted by JimChampion View north-west along the earthwork from grid reference SU039195. The Pentridge 3 long barrow is in the field to the left. The earthworks on the right are part of a 20th century rifle range on Martin Down.
Bokerley Dyke submitted by JimChampion View south-east along the Bokerley Dyke from grid reference SU040195 (the end of the large rifle range butt on Martin Down). The Hampshire side of the bank and the ditch are in shadow. In the distance the Dyke climbs Blagdon Hill.
Bokerley Dyke submitted by JimChampion View north-west along the Bokerley Dyke. Its 'business side', with the deep ditch, is on the right hand side (the Hampshire side), lost in shadow. The field on the left contains the Pentridge 2 long barrow, just visible on the left (over-planted with trees).
Bokerley Dyke submitted by JimChampion Self-portrait in shadow - the Bokerley Dyke casts a long shadow on a 20th century earthwork (the large butt of a disused rifle range).
Bokerley Dyke submitted by JimChampion View south along Bokerley Dyke, with the ditch on the left lost in shadow. To the right is Dorset and the field that contains the Pentridge 2 long barrow and the site of the Dorset Cursus's north-east terminal. Blagdon Hill is in the distance. The white and orange post on the left marks an underground gas pipeline.
Bokerley Dyke submitted by JimChampion Sheep on the bank of Bokerley Dyke, silhouetted by the setting sun. The earthwork forms the western edge of the Martin Down national nature reserve, and parts of it are grazed by sheep in order to prevent the encroachment of scrub.
Bokerley Dyke submitted by JimChampion View south-east along Bokerley Dyke, towards Blagdon Hill. The earthwork, with its ditch on the left (the Hampshire side) was created to keep Saxon invaders out of Dorset.
