Pilsdon Pen
Pilsdon Pen submitted by MattImpey : Pilsdon Pen is the site of an iron age hillfort, there are several others in the area built by the Durotriges to settle border desputes with the Dumnonii. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Hillfort in Dorset

This is a well visited site, and the ascent is not too difficult, but there is poor access from the road, especially in winter. The gateway is deep mud, the stone steps up to the stile are slippery, and the stile its self is often covered in mud from walkers boots.

There has been widespread clearing of gorse and other underbrush so now is a good time to visit before it regrows. Large areas of the banks have been effectively cleared without evidence of damage

According to the Ordnance Survey Lewesdon Hill (hill fort), just to the east, is 2 metres higher!

Pilsdon Pen - Iron Age look-out - Clouds aloft
ocean on horizon - sheep bleeting
360 degrees of Dorset - soft moss underfoot
heather waves - wind whistles
spinning barefoot - touching heaven.

This is a well visited site, and the assent is not too difficult even for OAP's, but the one thing that does prevent more people climbing the hill is the very bad access from the road, especially in winter.
The gateway is deep mud, the stone steps up to the style are slippery, and the style its self is often covered in mud from walkers boots.

It is worth the little bit of mud for the view. For Heaven's sake, this IS the countryside. I hope there will NEVER be a paved path to the top. (And I AM an OAP.)
