Wind Hill
Wind Hill submitted by johnson1952 : The track leading up to Wind Hill, an Iron Age promontory fort giving magnificent 360 degree views. Located between Lynmouth and Countisbury in Exmoor National Park and owned by National Trust. Access: open all year (Vote or comment on this photo)
The earthwork on Wind Hill overlooks the valley of the East Lyn, with Lynmouth Bay on the north side – a good defensive position. It is now owned by the National Trust, its eastern rampart a still imposing three metres high.

The Iron Age site has been described by archaeologist Aileen Fox as ‘A magnificent promontory fort on the North Devon coast.'

It is one of the possible locations for 'Arx Cynuit', the site of the invasion of Hubba the Dane in 878AD. 'Arx Cynuit' has been translated as Countisbury, but also as Kenwith Castle near Bideford SS4327. Hubba was defeated by Odda, Ealdorman of Devon.

Wind Hill Cheesden
Wind Hill Cheesden submitted by Sunny100 : Wind Hill Cairn off Ashworth Road at Cheesden, near Rochdale. Not much to see at the north side of the wall due to damage done over the last couple of centuries or so. It has survived a bit better because of the proximity to the wall, even though the wall was built over it. The cairn is in a better condition on the other side of the wall. Photo taken on 15/03/17. Wind Hill Cheesden
Wind Hill Cheesden submitted by Sunny100 : Cairn at Wind Hill, Cheesden, near Rochdale. In Heywood parish. The grassy tumulus lies beside the wall in a farmer's field, off Ashworth Road. It is about 3 feet high and is also visible on the opposite side of the wall - the wall being built across the middle of the mound. The wind turbine pole marks the centre of the cairn. No funerary urns were found when it was excavated in the ear... (Vote or comment on this photo)
