Cist in Devon

Information about the Giant's Hill East Cist comes from the Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks (PDW) website. Their notes tell us: "a little further to the east on giant's hill another cist was photographed in 2004. A large flat stone c0.9m x c0.9m partly covered by vegetation is the capstone of a small square cist c0.56m x 0.56m. One of the side stones is missing."

There is no NMR record on Pastscape, but the Heritage Gateway for Devon & Dartmoor HER number MDV70333 queries that this is a cist but says that "four side slabs present, one of which has fallen inwards. No capstone is present. This description matches that of HER number MDV55396, but may be the same feature." They date the cist from the Early Neolithic to the late Bronze Age (4000BC to 701BC) and this particular site is not scheduled.

However, clicking on the link for record for MDV55396, we are told that there are: "three round cairns at above ngr, SX 5947 6674 and SX 5947 6673, on the periphery of a hut settlement. The w mound is 5m in diameter and stands up to 0.7m high. The n mound lies 2.5m from the first, measures 5.3m in diameter and 0.8m high. The s mound is 7.5m by 5.5m, stands up to 0.2m high and has in the past been excavated or robbed to reveal a cist. The cist is situated at the wsw end of the cairn, is 1.4m by 0.7m by 0.3m deep and is orientated ne-sw." These features make up Historic England's Scheduled Monument 1019081: Enclosed stone hut circle settlement and three round cairns on Giant's Hill.
