Cist in Devon

Information about the Aller Brook East Cist comes from Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks (PDW) website. Their notes tell us: "only the four sides of the cist remain (1.0 x 0.5m), orientated WNW. Around it are two or three flat slabs of the retaining circle but the cover stone has gone as have all traces of the mound."

The PDW web page gives links to further information on Pastscape, Monument Number 1100139, which adds that "Faint traces of the enclosing cairn are still visible as ground remains. However, it is difficult to confirm the interpretation of the three recumbant stones lying in an arc around the cist as the vestiges of a kerb."

The Heritage Gateway for Devon & Dartmoor HER number MDV20166 dates the cist from the Early Neolithic to the Late Bronze Age (4000BC to 701BC). Scheduled monument number 1020487, which includes "part of the Dartmeet coaxial field system and other archaeological remains on Holne Moor west and north west of Ventford Reservoir."
