Cist in Derbyshire
Featured on the Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks website as one of a number of cairns, cists and hut circles in the area of land between Plym Steps, Erme Head, Langcombe Head, and Shavercombe Head, Deadman's Bottom E Cairn Circle and Cist is described as "cist (Listed as 'E' by Worth) found at Deadman's Bottom, Langcombe, by Mr. Button. Probable original dimensions, length 2ft 2 ins, width 1ft. 5ins. The stones barely show above the surface and the cover-stone is missing." ... "A well defined cairn 6.0m in diameter and 0.4m high with a cist in the top. This stone-lined cist measures 0.7m by 0.5m internally and 0.3 deep. Two of the side stones have fallen inwards."
Further information can also be found on the Pastscape website, see Monument Number 441650.
The Heritage Gateway for Devon & Dartmoor HER number MDV5122, adds that this cist is the easternmost of two cairns south east of Deadman's Bottom, that "the internal dimensions are rather uncertain since the south and easter stones leans inwards at 50 degrees with the horizontal and the north east stone leans inwards at an angle of 53 degrees." They date it to the Bronze Age (2200 BC to 701 BC).
This cist is also scheduled as Historic England List ID 1012289 (Cairn with a cist, the eastern one of two between Langcombe Brook and Deadman's Bottom).
Also see the PDW page for their Guide to the Langcombe Brook & Deadman's Bottom Cists, which gives a list of all the cairns, cists and ring settings in this area, complete with links to their equivalent Portal site pages.
