Cairn in Devon
This site is one of 7 cairns marked on the OS map and spread in a roughly east-west direction across the top of Hentor Warren. Some 200 metres to the north of Hentor A and 100 north of Hentor B, it is featured on the Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks website as the Hentor (Shavercombe C) Ring Setting Cairn and Cist. Their notes tell us this is: "The cairn is 5.2m in diameter and 0.7m high with the remains of a retaining circle. The cist is 1.1m by 0.6m and 0.6m deep with a stone floor; it is aligned north west/south east".
Further information can also be found on the Pastscape website, see Monument Number 438788, which dates this cairn with cist to the Bronze Age. They describe the site as being "to the west of Shavercombe Brook, on a north west facing slope at approximately 373.0m OD (above sea level) .... the retaining kerb is 4.9m N to S by 4.7m in diameter and 0.3m high."
The Heritage Gateway for Devon & Dartmoor HER number MDV3503(CIST in the Parish of Shaugh Prior), dates the cairn from the Early Neolithic to the Late Bronze Age (4000 BC to 701 BC), and it is also scheduled as Historic England List Entry No. 1012211 (Cairn with a cist south-east of Shavercombe Tor).
