Cairn and cist in Devon

This site is one of 7 cairns marked on the OS map and spread in a roughly east-west direction across the top of Hentor Warren. It is featured on the Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks website as the Hentor (Hen Tor) B Cist. 100 metres south of Hentor A, the PDW notes tell us this is: "The cairn measures 4.7m in diameter and 0.5m high. The cist, aligned north west to south east, measures 0.8m by 0.4m and is 0.3m deep. A probable coverstone 2.0m to the north measures 0.9m by 0.7m." Also see their Guide to the Hentor & Shavercombe Brook Cists.

Further information can also be found on the Pastscape website, see Monument Number 438791, which describes this as a cairn with cist dating to the Bronze Age. They tell us that this cairn and cist lie "on the scrub covered slope north of Hen Tor (Hentor) at approximately 388.0m OD (above sea level)."

The Heritage Gateway for Devon & Dartmoor HER number MDV3490 (CIST in the Parish of Shaugh Prior), dates the cist from the Early Neolithic to the Late Bronze Age (4000 BC to 701 BC) and adds that there are traces of a possible retaining kerb. This cairn and cist are also scheduled as part of Historic England List ID 1012213 (One of a number of cairns with cists south of Shavercombe Brook).
