Cairn and cist in Devon
This site is one of 7 cairns marked on the OS map and spread in a roughly east-west direction across the top of Hentor Warren. It is featured on the Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks website as the Hentor A Cist. Their notes tell us this is: "a cist consisting of two side stones, one of which has fallen outwards, and an irregular shaped coverstone." Also see their Guide to the Hentor & Shavercombe Brook Cists.
Further information can also be found on the Pastscape website, see Monument Number 438800, which describes this as a cairn with cist dating to the Bronze Age. They tell us the cist is aligned north-west to south-east and measures "1.3m by 0.6m by 0.4m deep. The irregular coverstone measures 1.5m x 1.1m." and add that the "remains of the cist are set in an amorphous cairn some 3.5m in diameter."
The Heritage Gateway for Devon & Dartmoor HER number MDV3511 (CIST in the Parish of Shaugh Prior), dates the cist from the Early Neolithic to the Late Bronze Age (4000 BC to 701 BC). It is also scheduled as part of Historic England List Entry No. 1012172 (One of a number of cairns with cists south of Shavercombe Brook).
