Standing Stone (Menhir) in Cornwall

Park at the entrance of a track on the east side of the stream at Buryas Bridge and walk across the grass verge on the south side of the road roughly 100m to the footpath heading south (left) at Bridge Cottage. Follow the footpath past the few houses uphill for around 230 metres until you reach a gate, on the right, in the corner of the second field on the hillside. Cross the field, upslope, for 125 metres where you will find the menhir, now fallen, lying on its side near the top of the field.

The stone is recorded on the OS First Edition (6" to the mile) map of 1887; a second stone occurred in the adjacent field and a third two fields away to the south. By the time of the Second Edition map in 1909, only this stone remained and it was subsequently noted on the 1936 and 1938 revisions and on the 1:10000 series, but not on modern maps.

The stone is around 7 feet in length and lies close to its original site, as packing stones can clearly be seen around the shallow socket. The stone has been heavily abused; one side appears natural, the other has been heavily beaten with hammers and it has been drilled with a row of shallow holes as a precursor to blasting with gunpowder to remove it altogether - there's no indication how recent this activity is.

The stone is clearly visible on Google Earth.

Re: Buryas Bridge menhir by Anonymous on Wednesday, 14 February 2018
The rows of holes were not for gunpowder blasting but are evidence of splitting operations using feather and tare. These are steel wedges that are driven into bored holes between iron sleeves (feathers) and struck in sequence to split the rock.
