Twiff13 visited on 29th Jan 2023 - their rating: Cond: 4 Amb: 3 Access: 4 Cold, damp Winter afternoon. The footpath from the nearby carpark was fine until the wind hit us! For an overcast day, the views were still spectacular. Not the best of places to meet your maker! Carpark surface was very wet and slippery chalk, quite squelchy so beware if it ices over. You cannot drive to the long barrow, used as a footpath now, and farm access as the barrow lies within private land of which you are allowed to access. Adjoining Walbury Hillfort is very accessible from the same carpark.

Inkpen Long Barrow
Inkpen Long Barrow submitted by JimChampion : A view of the east end of the barrow against the backdrop of rainclouds on a showery summer afternoon. The macarbe double-gibbet makes the site easy to find from the valley below. The erosion due to people walking the length of the barrow is visible in this picture: the info board says that various measures have been taken to try and limit wear and tear by the visitors to this great viewpoint. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Known also as Combe Gibbet, Inkpen long barrow stands on the ridge between Walbury Hillfort and Inkpen Hill. It is 60m long and 22m wide and vague traces of the quarry ditches can be seen.

The double gibbet was erected to hang George Broomham and his mistress, Dorothy Newman for the murder of Broomham's wife and son. The gibbet that stands today is not the original, but it is maintained as a striking local landmark.

Access The barrow lies alongside a by-way which gives vehicular access from the metalled road (if your vehicle can withstand the ruts). Probably better to take a short walk up the by-way from the Walbury Hillfort car park at the lane junction to the east.

I just had a visit to Combe Gibbet and was quite fascinated with the whole area, not to mention the hanging story. Went to the Swan for a nice organic lunch and had super friendly service. I would love to go back and do a few hikes around the area

There isn't much to see of the long barrow, but the view from the top is impressive.

I have a great view of it (and Walbury Hill) from my lounge window, so dont have to climb it anymore!
