SandyG visited on 3rd Mar 2016 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 3 Visiting this row also offers the opportunity to see the impressive Grimspound prehistoric settlement. Car parking is available at SX 69701 80894. Walk east along the well trodden path up to Grimspound which is defintely worth a good look. Then head north east to visit the row.

Grimslake Cist
Grimslake Cist submitted by SandyG : View from the south. Ranging rod stands by the eastern alignment stone and the cairn with large cist is visible beyond. Deep peat deposits in the vicinity have probably overwhelmed other stones (Scale 1m). (Vote or comment on this photo)
Cairn with cist in Devon

Originally thought to be a stone row/alignment, The Stone Rows of Great Britain concludes this is a 'non-row', adding: "This site was originally identified as a possible stone row including the two stones identified by Jeremy Butler. … A second visit to the site confirmed the presence of the additional stones and further earthworks that had not been spotted previously. The low platform leading from the cairn coincides with the stones and it would appear that they are associated with that rather being a stone row".

This row is featured on both the Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks (PDW) website (see their entry for the Grimslake Platform Cairn Circle and Cist) and the Stone Rows of Great Britain website (see their entry for the Grimslake Cist). The SRoGB entry includes a description, photographs, a plan of the cist and its platform with stones, access information and links to other online resources for more information.

The cist is also described on Pastscape as Monument Number 445636 and the Devon and Dartmoor HER as HER Number MDV8744.

This site is also scheduled as Historic England List ID 1020009 (Cairn and cist 430m north east of Grimspound).
