Ty Illtyd Chambered Cairn submitted by Johnny

This site, high up on a hilltop ridge above Llamhamlach, commands panoramic views along the floodplains of the Usk river. The north-facing chamber of the tomb, with capstone in situ, lies just off-centre in a much denuded oval shaped mound 23.0 metres in length and 15.5 metres wide.

Several upright stones outside the chamber may once have delineated a forecourt area suggesting that Ty Illtyd may have been a simple terminal chamber tomb. There is, however, some evidence that other chambers may once have existed.

An interesting additional feature of Ty Illtyd is that several of the slabs forming the chamber bear incised crosses, some plain, some enclosed in lozenges and some doubled. These are believed to date to early mediaeval times.

Note: This site is located on private land - permission should be sought from the nearby farm.

We've had a report from Jo Williams:

I was in brecon in december and I came across what seemed like a damaged cromlech. the cap stone was broken but the side stones were still in place as was the forecourt, if not a little damaged, as a path runs right through were the forecourt would have been. Lying on the ground were a few carved rocks (pot marks and lined curves) It was not shown on the OS map.

"on a bridleway that runs north from pen north village, very close to Ty Illtud cromlech. it would have been about the same size too"

Location indicated on map is SO104264 (where the w of Long Barrow is on the OS map above)

Nothing listed on Coflein at that location.

Perhaps someone in the area can have a look and send some photos

I had a walk up this bridleway today to check this out. Met a pleasant couple from London who were looking for Ty Illtyd chambered tomb. The 1/50,000 map not showing field boundaries had thrown them off course. You need to go to the farm further up the lane towards Brecon to get access to Ty Illtyd.
There are several suspicious piles of largeish slabby stones on the path. Certainly just the stuff to build a megalithic structure out of. It's difficult to say which of these are alluded to by Jo Williams, as the grid reference could be linked to several of the piles.
I would guess that most, if not all, are field clearance deposit's. They are piled into the hedgerows adjoining the bridleway. This doesn't mean there isn't something genuinely Megalithic here, perhaps mixed in with later deposit's. It's difficult to be more certain. I will post some photo's of different piles and maybe Jo will recognise the one that aroused suspicion in the first place.
