Autun visited on 16th Sep 2021 - their rating: Cond: 1 Amb: 4 Access: 5 various dolmen components form part of the eclectic and unusual collection of oddities in this nice church yard. There is parking adjacent to the well kept site.

karolus visited - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 5 This is a strange site in that is difficult to work out how many structures were here. While there is the dolmen itself, which appears to just be the chamber remaining under a single capstone with 3 uprights, right behind it at ground level are two huge chunky capstones at ground level. Whether these were dragged and dropped to make some kind of pavement or whether they are the roof of an underground chamber (like Mane Kerioned in the Carnac area-that has two levels) can't be discerned without digging. They are positioned at what would have been the original entrance to the chapel area from the path from town. Also just on the other side of the chapel wall from these, are 3 more capstones, also at ground level. Very peaceful feeling here, in a neighborhood that was very busy with megalithic activity.

Remains of a dolmen, two probable standing stones and a Cristianised Iron Age Stele in the churchyard at the chapel Saint-Ourzal.

I too thought that a short while ago so did a seach for this site in various records. I do not know where this originally came from, but could only find other items using this name which came from the same source at the same time (t4t35 and others since). However this site is NOT in the commune of Lanildut, but Porspoder.

I personally think it would be better to rename as Dolmen de Saint-Ourzal unless anyone can come up with a more correct historical name. There are many other details of this sitepage which need correcting also.

I will have another search through my documents later

The present church was built in 1902 on the site of an earlier 16th century building destroyed by fire in 1898. No evidence exists of a St Ourzal, presumably yet another example of a back projection of a 'saint' based on a place name as happens elsewhere, notably Cornwall. He was given the familiar legend of a 'Megalithic saint' i.e. killing a dragon using his stole (the equivalent of a girdle) and holy water as his weapons. Historians have speculated that the name, Ourzal, or Wrzal, might be a form of Arzel, patron saint of the parish of Plouarzel.

Plouarzel is the westernmost point of Brittany, in Finistère (Land's End), due west of Brest, an important harbour and France's second largest naval base. Its Megalithic importance, attested by the surviving mehirs and dolmens in the area, is surely connected to the sea route between the tin-producing southwest of Britain and the rest of Europe.
