Nearly all graves stem from the late Bronze Age and early Iron Age. Probably the only exception is the big round barrow Hügel II, which may stem from the late Neolithic. It is also the only grave with an inhumation burial, while all other round barrows contained cremation graves. The site displays several different barrow types, which have been surrounded by timber posts, round or oval trenches or so called keyhole-trenches (Schlüssellochgräben).
This place is, apart from its dimensions (at least 200 x 100 m), especially of significance, as it marks the beginning of the systematic examination of round barrow cemeteries in north-west Germany.
Today, some of the round barrows can still be seen, as they have been reconstructed after the early excavations. They cannot be accessed directly because they are fenced in. However, they are visible from behind the fence and it is possible to take photos. This part of the cemetery lies on private property and access to this area requires the permission of the owner.
Some of the finds are displayed in the Ruhr Museum in Essen (North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany).
