Hohenstein ("High Stone“) is a dolomite rock cliff in Wuppertal (Barmen district) in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is situated in a small park, which was founded in 1900 near Hohenstein street. Geologically, it was a coral reef in the Middle Devonian. It has been reported that this very unique place in the Wupper valley might have served as a holy place for Germanic tribes.

Here, it is supposed they worshipped the goddess Hertha(Nerthus) as Terra Mater (Earth Mother).

In medieval times, this place was believed to be occupied by the devil, which back then was believed for many former pagan ritual places. A common legend says that the Hohenstein was the escritoire of the devil. A dark spot on the rock, which, according to the myth, was caused by spoiled ink of the devil, was shown as a proof.

An alternative legend wants to see a bridal couple in the rock. In the early 19th century, this place was used for the celebration of many Christian feasts. Especially the church choir singing at the foot of the Hohenstein was famous at this time.

Today, the Hohenstein has fallen somewhat into oblivion, at least compared to the last century, when it was called the "Externsteine von Barmen" or "Loreley of Barmen". And even though the park and the rock have begun to be overgrown by the plants in the summer, it is still one of the most special places in Wuppertal with a great view over Barmen. In 1863, Langewiesche wrote:"From here, Barmen looks greater than it really is…".
