The proximity of the two monuments and its strong and inevitable link support the conclusion that both are part of the same megalithic complex, showing a good example of the necropolis organization of Alentejo megalithic social groups. Both monuments assume theirselves as relevant examples of the evolved central Alentejo culture and of the megalithic phenomenon in the whole Iberian Peninsula. Tomb 1 was excavated by Georg and Vera Leisner that brought to knowledge an extensive votive estate indicating the funerary use by a wider community, even highlighting the presence of artifacts that shown supraregional contacts between communities. It's classified as Site of Public Interest (SIP – Sitio de Interesse Público) and due to its importance is also integrated in a Special Protection Zone (ZEP – Zona Especial de Proteção).
About the architecture
This dolmen has an architecture of polygonal shape evolving into trapezoidal form, with a large head flanked by two pillars and a tapered entry. Contrary to what is observed in the very large chamber the corridor is of small proportions. By its grandeur and monumentality is assumed that should have contained numerous depositions or that could have been used as ossuary.
About the findings
There's a very big list of estate regarding this monument. It was found many necklace beads made of quartz and also of other materials in various shapes and forms, there was also some bone figurines (2 rodents, rabbits), many ceramic fragments of 200 vases in which 4 of them show symbolic decorations (1 vessel with solar eyes, zigzags and triangles), 134 eyed schist plaques with or without perforations, a small idol in shale (an Almeriense type idol), also staffs and traces of ocher granules. It's also very important to mention that more than 133 burials were made in this specific monument.
