Menir da Caeira
Menir da Caeira submitted by Bak_teria : Another view from the other side of the menhir. (Vote or comment on this photo)
The Menhir of Caeira is located in Vimieiro, Arraiolos, on a steading with the same name. The site is near by the town of Pavia in an area very rich in megalithic sites. It shares the vicinity with 8 dolmens (See also Antas da Caeira). Evidence of past settlements were found in this same region. This monument was identified in 1994 by Manuel Calado.

It is a large elongated monolith in a cylinder shape that is fallen next to a tree, tumbled in a little mount with steep slopes that dominates the area where are situated the dolmens of Caeira. Because of this particularity is impossible to determine if there are decorations on the lower face. It is approximately 5.20 m (17 feet) long and 1.20 m (3.93 feet) in maximum diameter. Very few archaeological studies were made around this monument so there is almost no information about it. Unfortunately this menhir is not classified as cultural heritage and therefore is not protected by law.

IMPORTANT INFORMATIONS:

- The entrance to the zone of the monuments may be blocked by fences, essentially created to demarcate the land and not allow the escape of livestock. Usually there are fences with demarcated areas where the access is possible. When entering in demarcated land never forget to close the access gate of the location, you need to be very careful with this rule because cattle can escape.

- There are no signs prohibiting us from entering so the access can be open but be careful when you explore every time you see this red plaques that alert you for the Hunting Zones. Remind yourself that usually hunters can only hunt at Thursdays, Sundays and on public holidays.
