Rock Art in Østfold

The rock art site at Råhaugen consists of four parts on different rock outcrops surrounded by grain fields. The rocky outcrops have cattle fences surrounding them and are also surrounded by tall grass. Some signposts have been put up and a footpath leads north from the country road called Torpebråten going east-west.

Sadly the site have been in danger of erosion and some of the figures have been almost totally erased by the erosion. Some of the rock art panels have been covered up in earth the moss to protect them from the elements and further erosion. Only visible today are several panels with cup marks. Among the covered figures are a 2 metres long ship figure called "Onsøyskipet", a group of 11 smaller ships and three groups of 13, 35 and 70 cup marks.

When the fence was built around the site, a panel with 99 cup marks was found. This panel is still visible today, the other part that was visible is interesting because it has a group of very large cup marks.
The cup marks in the second part are around 4 to 22 cm in diameter and some of the cup marks are almost 5cm deep. They are among the deepest cup marks known in Norway. The site is also consisting of a human figure, but this figure is very difficult to see and is almost only visible in low light.
To the north of the rock art site is a large barrow cemetery, I was not able to get there to photograph as I could not cross the grain field. I decided to leave it to next time!
