Konung HÃ¥gens Helle
Konung HÃ¥gens Helle submitted by kenntha88 : Site in Nordland Norway (Vote or comment on this photo)
In the garden area of a local school in Nordland is an enormous stone block. It is almost cubic in shape with large flat sides and a large flat top. It is called Kongssteinen or "Konung HÃ¥gens Helle". There are cup marks on top of the flat surface and also a local legend is connected to the stone.

The school and stone is located inside the town of Kabelvåg. The stone has been mentioned in several local stories and some old legends. They say it was once an observation post to overlook the ocean to the south and south east. They also say it was a place of gathering and speeches were made from top of the stone.

According to the official Norwegian site of archaeology there are several cup-marks on top of the flat surface. The cup marks were impossible to photograph since the stone is too high and the sides to steep to climb and I did not take a ladder!

The stone is 2,5 metres in height at the north end and at the south around 3,5 metres in height. The longest sides are around 5-6 metres long. The sides are very steep and on some sides they turn inwards. The top is several square metres large, but climbing the stone was impossible!

Hello SpaceTravellor!

Well, according to the official norwegian website for arceology and cultural history www.kulturminnesøk.no there are cup markings on top of the stone, some quite large. But I could not see them when I went to visit the site, because I could not get on top of the stone. According to the website they are all located on the top flat surface on the stone.

Hello kenntha88,

Are you aware of any drawings of the cup marks?
