This is the overall sitepage for the Fernworthy collection of ceremonial sites. On the eastern upslopes of Dartmoor, just a couple of miles to the southwest of the lovely little old town of Chagford at the upper reaches of the South Teign River, is found the lovely Fernworthy Reservoir within the Fernworthy Forest plantation, now a popular nature reserve and outdoor recreation area. Within this forest at a place known as Froggymead can be found the Fernworthy collection of ancient prehistoric ceremonial sites, which consist of a stone circle, three stone rows or avenues with their associated terminal cairns, plus a few other cairns. Also within this forest can be found several ancient settlements consisting of ancient hut circles and other related structures.

The Fernworthy series of monuments is easily found by driving to the Ferworthy Lake, and continuing around the perimiter road as far as possible before parking in the large parking area provided. From here, take the forest trackway back in a westerley direction up a slight hill, and then after a couple of hundred yards at a junction taking the trackway to the left. After a few more hundred metres, the forest opens out on the right hand side into a green open area within which the monuments stand.

This area was in recent times covered by forest, and is still almost completely covered with rotting tree stumps, making any progress away from the obvious pathways difficult. It can (as it was today) also be very wet and boggy, fully living up to its alternative name of Froggymead.

Most of these monuments are marked with small wooden posts, on top of which have been placed markers, a number and a letter, for which there is no obvious translation, but which I have included in the alternative names where I can remember them.

Descriptions of the monumental components will be contained on their own sitepages (see nearby sites list below).

The Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks (PDW) website includes entries for the Fernworthy Ceremonial Complex and the Fernworthy Ceremonial Complex (including the Fernworthy Stone Circle), which add: "The Fernworthy circle is part of a group of ceremonial monuments including 3 stone rows and 5 cairns that may once have rivalled Merrivale and Shovel Down as ceremonial centres. The site is in a small clearing in Fernworthy Forest off the path from the reservoir to Teignhead Farm".

Fernworthy circle submitted by caradoc68 : SX 654 841, Fernworthy Circle. The circle was excavated by the Dartmoor Exploration Committee in 1887 who reported a layer of charcoal within the circle but no other finds. The black and white photo was taken 10 years later and shows just how much modern plantion blocks any views of the surrounding landscape. (7 comments)

Fernworthy circle
Fernworthy circle submitted by mattimpey : Fernworthy Stone Circle is in the middle of Fernworthy Forest a short walk from a small car park. Excavations here and at Grey Wethers Stone Circle in 1898 found charcoal remains which could suggest the site was once used with fire. The poor picture quality is because it was raining heavily.
