Hookney Tor Cairn
Hookney Tor Cairn submitted by Bladup : Hookney Tor Cairn, showing the curving bank of the cairn (it's attached to an outcrop), with Grimspound in the background. (Vote or comment on this photo)
A tor cairn situated on Hookney Tor and forming part of a discrete cluster of mounds running along a prominent ridge. The cairn includes a rubble bank attached to the southern face of a rock outcrop.

The ring bank survives as a 2 metre wide curving earthwork enclosing a D-shaped area. The tor itself is 6 metres wide and up to 0.9 metres high, Scheduled.

Update November 2019: This cairn is feature on the Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks (PDW) website - see their entry for the Hookey Tor Cairn, which tells us: "(this cairn) resemble(es) a barrow in shape. Enough of the topsoil has been removed to show that the mound is a natural outcrop feature covered with turf and heather, enclosed on three sides by a broken turf and stone bank. A footpath approaching the west side has probably effaced the remainder of the circuit".

The cairn is also recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 621684, as MDV6611(Tor cairn 50 metres north-east of Hookney Tor), which says: "(this) cairn (is) built around a natural outcrop and subsequently pillaged. Diameter 20m, height 2.4m".

The cairn is also scheduled as Historic England List ID 1019996 (Tor cairn 50m north east of Hookney Tor), which includes a description of the cairn, adding the site has extensive views in all directions.
