Hillfort in Dumfries and Galloway

The Iron Age hillfort and beacon on Ward Law is circular in shape, its ramparts are preserved on whole perimeter. The best preserved part of the earthworks is at the south, at the north there are remains of the entrance. The site offers commanding view towards the coast. As many hillforts in Britain, Ward Law suffers from badgers' activity.

In a short distance to the north there was a Roman camp, now completely ploughed out.

Ward Law on ScotlandsPlaces and Canmore ID 66099.

An extract from the Canmore record reads this: "Fort, measuring 210' by 180' within two much worn ramparts, now planted with trees ... Fort, measuring 210' by 180' within two much worn ramparts, now planted with trees .... Its interest lies in its situation, commanding the narrowing Solway Firth, and in the presence of a Roman fort (sic: NY06NW 4), now ploughed out almost to obliteration, only a few yards to the North .... there are no traces of the possible signal station built on the rampart at NY 0244 6672."
