Ring cairn/stone ring or possible pound in Devon
At grid reference SX 6520 8536 lies the Stonetor Hill Stone Ring Cairn Circle.
Update October 2016: Information about this site comes from the Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks (PDW) website, which questions whether or not this feature may be a possible pound. PDW's notes say: "the feature consists of a sub-circular earthern bank 25m in diameter and up to 0.4m in height. It is best preserved on the North side where the bank is well defined, flat topped and has a plan width of about 4.0m. On the South side the bank has been spread and flattened but still survives to 0.5m in height as a prominent outward-facing scarp, where the natural ground surface falls away from the enclsure. There is no entrance through the bank."
The PDW web page gives links to further information on Pastscape, Monument Number 889072, which adds that this is "a previously unrecorded pound lying at 410m OD within the saddle or watershed between Shovel Down to the North-East and Fernworthy Forest to the South. It has been bisected by the South Hill leat."
This site is also recorded as MDV48856 (Ring cairn on Stonetor Hill) on the Devon and Dartmoor HER, which adds that a modern track runs through the site (as noted by Turner). The cairn is also scheduled as part of Historic England List Entry No. 1017874 (The North Teign coaxial field system (western part) and associated later remains at Shovel Down, Stonetor Hill and Long Ridge).
