Marker Stone in Derbyshire

According to a transcript of the document, 'Perambulation of Baslow Boundary 1721', the Hurkling Stone is located on the boundary of the Manor of Baslow, and it bears the inscription XMB. The Hurkling Stone stands at the junction of the present day parish and district boundaries by two ancient walls. I have read that 'Hurkling' or 'Herklin' means to crouch and comes from the Old Norse language, the legacy of the Danish Viking settlement of this area.

The Hurkling Stone
The Hurkling Stone submitted by MartinRS : The Hurkling Stone on White Edge Moor. A prominent rock outcrop on White Edge itself is often mistaken for the Hurkling Stone probably because the letter 'H' is near to this stone on OS 1:25 000 maps. The Hurkling Stone is in fact a boundary marker and can be found next to the letter 'e' in stone on these maps. © Copyright Martin Speck and licensed for reuse under the Creative Commons CC BY-SA ...
