Effigy Mounds in Jefferson County, Wisconsin. A large number of effigy mounds on the shores of Lake Koshkonong, Wisconsin. Probably from the Mississippi Culture, 1000-1500 CE. A portion of these mounds, part of the General Atkinson Group can be visited at Indian Mounds Park.

The park is jointly managed by Jefferson County and the Ho-Chunk Nation, and is open daily. The locations given here for map links are for this small public park. As of 2010, the mounds in the park (which include two bird forms and three "turtle" or "lizard" forms) are over grown, but still identified. It appeared that at one time the vegetation on the mounds was kept clipped, and the forms outlined with chipped bark and sawdust to make them easier to see, but this activity had not been performed for several seasons. Current condition is unknown. Many other of the originally recorded mounds have disappeared since they were recorded due to development. Others are on private property, including several within the Koshkonong Mounds Country Club golf course. The private country club does offer 1day guest membership, but access to remaining mounds on their property is unknown.

Lake Koshkonong Mounds submitted by bat400 : One of the larger remaining mounds in this group, shaped like a turtle. However, this is just about impossible to tell from a photo, both because there is no way to see the overall shape from ground level, and because these mounds are not kept carefully trimmer of high vegetation or outlines with contrasting ground cover. Photo by bat400, July 2010. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Lake Koshkonong Mounds
Lake Koshkonong Mounds submitted by AKFisher : There are many ancient mound sites that have been incorporated into golf courses, not just the Newark Circle & Octagon. This is the Koshkonong mound site in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin. Mound complexes are typically in widespread flat areas which is "ideal" for golf courses. The large mound on the right is an ancient burial mound. (Not sure about the other two.) Photo courtesy Dr Greg Little, au... (Vote or comment on this photo)
