Gortnatubbrid submitted by frogcottage42 : Looking over the missing axial, there is a related stone row about 100m to the NE hidden by the dry grasses at the rear of this view. (Vote or comment on this photo)
This appears to be a five stone circle with a missing axial stone. There are four stones between .6m and .9m high the taller being towards the NE which is what we would expect for a Cork / Kerry circle and the axial would usually be lower so there is a possibility that it is present but buried.

Access is excellent being at the side of a good farm road and visible from the main road 100m to the

The associated stone row is at W 19385,75900 and is in average condition and fairly unremarkable other than being an integral part of this circle complex. The relationship between circle and row is not clear but if we are ever to discover the exact nature of this it is essential that they are recorded and kept in context.

Gortnatubbrid submitted by GaelicLaird : The view to the north east towards Mullaghanish mountain with the TV transmitter mast visible on the summit. The circle appears to align in a NE direction with the nearby stone group (possible stone row) and the lower eastern slope of Mullaghanish where it meets the rising ground of a nearby hill to its east. A possible sun rising position at winter solstice. Photo taken April 2022. (2 comments - Vote or comment on this photo)

Gortnatubbrid submitted by frogcottage42 : This looks like a five stone circle with a missing axial. This view from NE shows that the alignment would be correct (Vote or comment on this photo)

Gortnatubbrid submitted by frogcottage42 : This is the related stone row. Quite a standard sort of feature in this area the taller stone is around 1.1m high and they are aligned to the SW (Vote or comment on this photo)

A five stone circle in the townland of Gort na Tiobratan officially recorded as monument number CO058-029----

In boggy ground, near top of hill. Circle incomplete; N entrance stone is missing. Orthostats are 0.7m to 0.8m L, 0.45m to 0.5m T and 0.6m to 0.8m H. Internal measurement along main axis, aligned E-W, is c. 2.3m. Anomalous group of standing stones (CO058-030---) 90m to NE. (O Nualláin 1984a, 34, no. 61)

The nearby anomalous stone group (monument number CO058-030----) is located in an adjoining field approx. 70m to the north east.

On level patch of rough boggy ground, on N-facing slope. Depicted as pair of standing stones and named 'Galláin' on 1940 OS 6-inch map. Upright stone (H 1.4m; 0.65m x 0.55m) leans to SW; long axis NE-SW. Second stone (L 2.4m; 0.85m x 0.65m), 0.7m to SW, has fallen; lying NW-SE. Third stone (H 0.34m; 0.54m x 0.28m), protruding above ground 0.95m to S of upright stone, may have acted as packing stone to fallen slab; long axis N-S.

The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997).
