Blakeley Raise is a beautiful little stone circle on the edge of the Western Lakeland Fells. It has been sympathetically restored and with excellent views, this is one of the easiest of the Cumbrian circles to access sitting right by the roadside. Locally known as Kinniside Stone Circle, this circle used to be omitted from Ordnance Survey maps. The reason seems to be that at the time of the early surveys, the stone circle was non-existent, the stones - all 12 of them - having long been taken by a local farmer for use as gateposts and building materials. Look at the photos for how they came back!

Not long after the First World War, a restoration job was accomplished by a working party. Having cleaned out and measured the sockets in the ground in which the stones were originally set, they searched for and located-the original twelve stones, and completely restored the site. Today the circle is exactly as it was when first laid out, thousands of years ago.

At one stage there was a horse having a scratch on every stone bar 1. At least the circle will diminish in height 'equally' over the next few hundreds of years. I have several photos of horses rubbing themselves on the stones but this o...

Blakeley Raise submitted by Colin McCallien : Blakeley Raise Stone Circle. As the ground is fairly level it is impossible to get a shot that looks down on the circle so the best one can do is take a wide flat shot like mine.

Blakeley Raise submitted by Horatio : This is just one of several Bronze Age monuments that can be found on this open moor overlooking Egremont. Several settlements and burial cairns were built further up the hill next to the river Calder, a source of fresh water that was likely the reason people settled here.

Pastscape says: Site of a stone circle. It currently features 11 small stones of local granite, and features a possible cairn at its centre. The circle was apparently "dismantled" in the 18th century by the farmer (the farm then being known as Standing Stones Farm), who re-used the stones as gate-posts. Restoration was apparently undertaken by a Dr Quine in 1925, who set the stones in concrete. Whether he used the original stones, and whether or not he erected them in their original stone holes, is unclear.

The ring of eleven small stone of local granite has a possible cairn at its centre. (See plan 3). There is a strong local tradition that this is a fake monument. The stones are set in concrete and may have been erected on a site of 'standing stones' by Quine in 1925. Quine speaks on of "partial restoration" (a), which suggests that many of the stones are in their original positions. Alternatively, another report says the ring originally consisted of
13 stones, 8 of which were removed, and it was these stones which Quine replaced

According to Burl, the site was restored in 1925 by Dr Quine who described it as a partial restoration & another report suggests that eight (of an original thirteen stones) were retrieved from a gate for the restoration. This would suggest that three stones remained in place when Dr Quine arrived. What date is the Wainwright quote?

My money is on AW. I can't find it on Magic Map and Pastscape just says "A stone circle, probably surrounding a cairn, said to be on Blakeley Raise. This is almost certainly the restored circle NY 00 SE 6 on Blackeley Moss." Anyone got any more information?

In 'Wainwright in the Valleys of Lakeland' (Mermaid Books), the late, great fell-walker, country lover, and author says:
"....the Kinniside Stone Circle alongside the road attracts attention: I could never understand why it was not indicated on the maps of the Ordnance Survey, usually so meticulous about antiquities, until reading that it was a fake, put there by a local schoolmaster and his pupils to emulate the works of their ancient forebears."
If Nicola's and Threlkeld's info is correct, I wonder who told Mr. A. Wainwright this story?
