Les Vachons (Voulgezac) submitted by taupin : Site in Poitou:Charente (16) France (Vote or comment on this photo)
Cave and Rock Shelters in Poitou:Charente. This site, discovered in 1867 is 1 km along the stream of Font-Robert, an under tributary of the Charente river in the rural district of Voulgezac. The limestone cliff faces south,south-west about 190° and is composed by many shelters and two little caves. Inside one of these caves there is a source of water even in the driest weather.

This place was studied three times : on 1867 by Trémeau de Rochebrune , on 1896 by Chauvet and on 1914 and 1922 by J. Coiffard -an erudite farmer who lived in Voulgezac-.

This site was dated to the upper Paléolithic period with pieces of Aurignacien and Solutreen. Five levels from Aurignacien to Gravettien. One molar dated from Périgordien was founded here.

The main piece founded here was a "chisel" known as "Burin des Vachons" because of its characteristic hand made nature. This prehistoric deposit was classified as a historical monument in 1927 .

Attached are some photos of the rock-shelter, the cave with the source and the biggest shelter with 8 m overhanging and horseshoe shape, also other pictures of dig places.
