MegalithicChaton visited on 11th Feb 2024 - their rating: Cond: 5 Amb: 4 Access: 4 Amazingly large boulder that really suprised me when I first saw it. Easy walk down a large path with a small uphill on a smaller marked path to get to it. Looks like some chalk marks from recently bouldering attempts. The side opposite the main path is very mossy. Very interesting shape at the front.

Staunton Suck Stone (Gloucestershire)
Staunton Suck Stone (Gloucestershire) submitted by 4clydesdale7 : The Base of the Stone from the SW (Vote or comment on this photo)
Reputed to be the largest detached block of rock in the British Isles this huge boulder of conglomerate Old Red Sandstone and Quartz, weighing in excess of 30,000 tons, stands proudly over the River Wye in Highmeadow Woods North of Staunton one of the oldest villages in the Forest of Dean.

It is best approached from the south along a forest track from the NW corner of the Village - be patient it is a fair walk but the end result is well worth the effort - superb views - and the two Hearkening Rocks are close-by - a rewarding visit with other notable stones/rocks in the area - Buck Stone - the Broadstones - Toads Mouth Stone and of course the Long Stone

The word 'Suck' may be derived from the Anglo-Saxon words 'Socage' 'Soccage' or 'Soke' thus this stone maybe where 'rent might have been paid' or 'local lords/justices held a Court which heard disputes over rent'
