I think you will have difficulty if anyone visits this site. Contractors felling out timber for the Duchy of Lancaster decimated this stone circle about 18 months ago.

Fortunately a villager has a photographic record (for a thesis he did). If you need further information, have a look at the parish council website at www.cloughtonpc.org.uk for my contact details.

I believe the National Park archaeologist and English Heritage are involved, but as the Duchy = HM Queen, I suspect prosecution is unlikely.

    Don't panic !
Cloughton moor cairn circle was still there in august 2002 when i visited,
and it looked no different. The people at Standingstones rigg farm seem quite proud of the circle so i doubt they would let anything happen to it.

Is this the cairn circle on the edge of the forest at SE 98242 97015

    http://www.danu.co.uk/gallery/info/stones/druid.html

The ref given in the article was TA003959 which is further down the road and on the opposite side - I don't know of a circle in that position, maybe that's where the confusion arises.

Cloughton Moor - Stone Circle in Yorkshire (North Riding) (Near The Hulleys farm)

Sadly I can confirm that the stone circle on Cloughton Moor which had been in very good condition was almost completely destroyed recently by contractors removing timber on behalf of the Duchy of Lancaster. Check with the Scarborough Evening News for report and photographs about this. Little now remains of the site; check with English Heritage for other information, also the NYMNPA may provide some information about this.
Unfortunately the irrepairable damage had already been done before anyone became aware of it.
Also see Cloughton Parish Council minutes regarding this.
    Reported by concerned Cloughton villager.

Graeme Chappell (post of 21 sept 2002 startin "don't panic" is getting his stones confused.

Standing Stones Rigg is on the moor top adjacent the A171 & there are many tumuli in that area. The destroyed circle at The Hulleys is off the C76 - road from Cloughton to Staintondale.
