Balure Cairns submitted by ericjohn7 : Carn Ban looking north. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Cairns in Argyll. A group of three cairns on an area of peat covered by heather. Very uneven underfoot and boggy due to peat extraction; cairns and peat extraction is clearly visible on google earth, but not at ground level. All three cairns have trees and scrub on them which makes them stand out above the heather.

I accessed the site via the road from benderloch to Eriska, past achnamoine farm entrance till you reach a deciduous plantation on the left, there is a passing place next to the gate please park on the grass not in the passing place.

Follow path through the plantation till you reach a gate on your left into the open field.from the gate there is an overgrown track which is higher than the surrounding land drier but still uneven. Two cairns are to the left of this track and the cairn called carn ban is to the right of this track. The easternmost cairn at NM 89754140 has a rowan tree and deciduous scrub growing on one edge,it measures 12 metres in diameter and 0.5 metres above present ground level.

The central cairn at Nm 89604145 has a hawthorn tree and gorse on it,it measures 13.7 metres in diameter and 1.2 metres in height. It has been robbed of a large quantity of its stones, and the capstone of a large cist is now partly exposed. This is a massive slab measuring at least 3 metres by 2.1m with a thickness of 0.4 metres.A portion of one of the side slabs is also visible. The interior of the cist, however is choked with debris.

The most westerly cairn is at NM 89364139 and marked on maps as carn ban this cairn also has a hawthorn tree, gorse and bracken on it ,this lies on the edge of the peat area and from the cairn the land drops down towards the sea giving great views from the top.

The cairn measures 23 metres in diameter and 3 metres in height,a shallow pit has been sunk in the top otherwise the cairn appears to be intact. A difficult site underfoot but well worth a visit.
