The obvious route is to take the road along the north side of Glen Lyon from Fortingal, turn left at Inverar to cross River Lyon, then turn right to follow the track along the south side of the Glen Lyon. Before the bridge there is a large "Private - No Trespassing" sign but don't worry, this is Scotland, there is no law of general trespass and you are allowed to roam freely on private land provided you avoid buildings and ground attached to buildings (yards, gardens), avoid crops and livestock, and behave yourself. This does NOT mean you can DRIVE on private land and the farmer here has been known to object to people driving over the estate's well-maintained (and no doubt expensive) bridges, roads and cattle grids, - to the extent of blocking a visitor's car with farm vehicles! I would advise you leave your car at the main road and enjoy the very pleasant walk.
The OS map shows another bridge further up Glen Lyon at Camusvrachan and Google maps shows a lay-by with room to park at the north end. This is much closer to the Praying Hands and would be a shorter walk. Again, cross the bridge, turn right and follow the road till it crosses the burn which runs between Balmenoch (house) and Roroyere (house and farmyard), both on the right (north) side of the road, then follow the path opposite Roryere up the hill for about 1200m till you see the Praying Hands on the skyline to your right.

Surely this monument is manmade .The base is too well cut and the vertical stones fit to accurately to be natural and the small stone between the two verticals appears to be placed in order to spread the verticals. The trouble is when was this done??

This appears to be a type of granite, a rock which can split naturally along straight lines, hence the neat shape of the base. One would expect the two vertical faces to fit together whether the split was natural or not. There are other glacial erratics like this dotted about the highlands.

Many year ago I followed an energy ley up to the "Praying Hands" without even knowing of its existence - the ley went straight into its broad face, and another ley crosses through the gap to Fortingall stone circle and Croftmoraig - this one is emitted from the mystical island and volcanic plug of Staffa.

You can get some of this information from my website http://www.ley-man.co.uk, or much more from my book "Ley Lines and Earth Energies".

Best Wishes,
David R. Cowan

David , Interesting ,that despite your suggestion that cup marked rocks are on " ley lines " , along with all the other dowsers you missed those in the area .

Perfectly natural , not a standing stone. I believe it's only in the past 20 years that it has ben referred to as the PHOM . There are some genuine prehistoric sites in the area , the first of anything Neolithic discovered in 2006 ,one of which has an association with the recent arcaheoacoustic nonsense at Stonehenge in that it is a rock shelter with rock art but also a very distinctive echo. http://canmore.rcahms.gov.uk/en/site/293679/details/gleann+da+eig/ There are other marked rocks in the area but this is the most interesting .

It's not clear to me whether this is actually a prehistoric standing stone but it doesn't seem that upright stone could have got there by glacial action or any other way. The name of course indicates Christianisation, with suggestions of possible pagan connections.

Angus Clyne on Flickr says he was told by an old bloke building a stone wall at the bottom of the hill it is also called "Fiann's Arrow" - he's not sure about the spelling.
Angus' great photo is here:

The site does seem to have attracted a lot of folklore:

An article from Philip Coppens about this area: Glen Lyon - the valley of the Sun God

Glen Lyon, in Pertshire, is one of the most remote locations in Scotland, but also one of the few places where Scotland's Celtic past was kept alive, particularly a veneration of the old Celtic deities, from the Sun God Lugh, to the Creator Goddess the Cailleach.

Just when I think we must be reaching saturation point in Scotland and England, sites like this keep appearing!

Maybe "Fion's Arrow". The original position was way off, so I plonked it on the slopes of Creag nan Eildeag as described from the directions given on Philip Coppens' website.
Possibly a basaltic extrusion? It's not marked on any maps, so I'm guessing it's natural.

There just happened to be "an old bloke building a stone wall" who happened to know it is called "Fiann's Arrow". It's the glen farmers who repair the dykes and there's been no wall building there that I know of, so I'd be inclined to take Mr Clyne's story telling with a pinch of salt.

There's lots of similar stones like these dotted around the area on opposite sides of the hill. They're the result of glacial transport and deposition. You can see a similar one here by the side of the road on the A827 at grd reference NN 64227 37630

Sandy , true there are plenty of erratics but can't say I've seen anything like the Clach na Sgoltadh /PHOM along Loch Tay side / Ben Lawers and certainly not at that grid ref .
