The largest (A) being an early bronze age round barrow and the remaining pair two later bowl barrows (B) and (C). The group was not formally identified until 1945 when the trio was discovered by WJ Dowding the then owner of Slaughterford Paper Mills (now derelict and also worth a visit). Mr Dowding encouraged a local archaeologist AS Mellor to undertake an investigation by excavation resulting in mainly Romano British Iron Age and Bronze Age artefacts being found. The round barrow (A) is about 20m in diameter and 2.75m high - (B) is 10m in diameter and 1m high and (C) is 7m in diameter and about 0.75m high.
The group is a very attractive sight and well worth a visit.
What about the name? The Danes Tump - although pastscape suggests that locals are not familiar with the name, three local farmers I met today were in no doubt about it. All three confirmed the local folklore that a Danish Chieftain was buried in (A) after losing a skirmish with Alfred the Great in the 10th Century when the Danes had a local stronghold in Chippenham.
