Parts of a 6000 year old archeological site have been destroyed during rioting in Chiomonte. The necropolis and village were heavily damaged during on June 27th, 2011. The local population are resisting the project to build a tunnel and high speed train route (TAV) which is being funded with millions of Euros from the EU.
During the rioting, police intervened and appear to have caused the damage shown in the top image. The police had been warned that they were operating in an archeological area of great importance. The local commissioner writes about the procedure for the "restoration of damages caused by police" which "has been put in place for reasons of 'force majeure'" and there will be "a claim against those responsible for this police response ", ie towards the protesters.
In the first days afterwards, local government officials accused people participating in the protest of taking stones from the necropolis in order to throw them against riot police. However this article quotes the official of Regione Piemonte for Cultural Affairs making a public statement that in their view the police were responsible for the destruction shown. ( Google Translation).
There has been more damage caused by the vehicles from the company Italcoge, who have a contract to surround the area with high fences in order to avoid further protests.
The riots are now over but hundreds of people (including old women and children) are sitting every day outside the site to keep the situation under control. Work on the TUV tunnel has not started. The area was cleared by police because in order to get the money from the EU the State needed to show that they had actually started by June 30.
Many politicians and MPs have visited the site afterwards. Gianni Vattimo, MP at the European Parliament reported to the Parliament in Brussels that no excavation work has started so far.
The Archeological museum is still closed and authorities are refusing to give information about it. We have been asking information to the town of Chiomonte’s Culture office, and to the person in charge of the Area. We have been asking to print on the site’s page that the area is currently closed off by police and cannot be visited. Several people have asked these question. No reply has been given.
