Anne T visited on 16th May 2019 - their rating: Cond: 2 Amb: 4 Access: 3 Shovel Down Row 4 Cairn: Walking from Kes Tor across the moorland trackway, we came across this 'stony lump' at the top of a slope. Looking to my right (north), there was a double stone row running downslope at 90 degrees to the track. Only a small cairn, but interesting, particularly given its context. The group spent some time checking to see if any trace of the cist was visible, but we didn't find it.

This cairn is recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 443580, which adds: "It has a central hollow 0.5m deep with displaced slabs on its sides with the remains of a badly robbed cist. The cairn occupies the NW crest of a shallow combe between Shovel Down and Chagford Common and has very extensive views to the N and NW. It lies at the end of a double stone row [Shovel Down Row 4]". It also has an entry on the Devon and Dartmoor HER; see: MDV6182 (Cairn with cist on Shovel Down, Chagford), and is scheduled as part of Historic England List Entry No. 1017874 (The North Teign coaxial field system (western part) and associated later remains at Shovel Down, Stonetor Hill and Long Ridge).
The cairn also features on the Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks website - see their entries for the Shovel Down Cist and the Shovel Down Complex.
Butler, in his "Dartmoor Atlas of Antiquities", volume 2, pages 180-181 also briefly records this cairn, telling us that whilst there is a central pit to this cairn, the cist is no longer visible.
This cairn is also included in the Stone Rows of Great Britain's entry for the Shoveldown 4 stone row, which includes a plan of the monuments on Shoveldown showing their relationship to each other, a photograph of this cairn, and various views along the row (to and from the cairn).
