Two standing stones remain to be seen in the fields about 800m apart, on the boundary line between the communities of Thaon and Colomby-sur-Thaon. They are both between 1.3 and 1.5 metres tall, and possibly have cupules carved into them. Along this boundary are a couple of further big pieces of stone, maybe just field clearance, or perhaps the remains of other broken menhirs (I understand that four were recorded in 1912).

From Rida's Wikipedia article :

Which Google translates as follows :
In 1912, Dr. Raoul Doranlo, Member of the French Prehistoric Society reported for the first time a stone in the town of legends Thaon: Tourniresse Stone and four other stones nearby called by the peasants: the Grosses Devises. Several flint blades, scrapers and scrapers were found nearby. These stones have been identified as authentic menhirs.

Stone Tourniresse which according to legend, rotated on itself, is invisible now. Either it is completely buried, or it has been moved or removed. On the contrary two standing stones in the middle of cultivated fields, exactly on the boundary between the towns of Thaon and Colomby-sur-Thaon are easily recognizable. The first Grosses Devises, the farther east, has a curved form of a column, it measures 1.30 m high, 0.65 m wide at the base to a thickness of 0.40 m. The second, 800 m north-west, has a triangular shape and is approximately 1.50 m in height with a maximum width of 0.85 m and 0.30 m thick. They are limestone and both include many wells. They are located on both sides of the old road of the pilgrims that went to Dover Cairon la Deliverance.

The term comes from the Latin motto divisio and means boundary stone at the property line. These stones are in fact exactly placed on the municipal boundary line. Dr Doranlo noted that the megalithic monuments of the plain of Caen affect most often very small dimensions. Many were broken up by farmers to make currency, sometimes they were buried, broken, knocked over or removed.

Many other remarkable stones medium size are visible on the edge of fields, cadastral boundaries.

On the way back to the Ouistreham ferry from Christmas at my sister's, it was a lovely sunny day, and we had made good time, despite a late start out. So after a sandwich for lunch, decided to try and get to these stones from the other side, by walking from the village of Colomby-sur-Thaon.

Parked by the Mairie, and walked south west out along a farm track which looked to lead right to the eastern stone. But just a few hundred metres short, the trackway stopped, and we were left at a freshly ploughed and sowed field.

After almost a week with no rain, the fields were now much drier, although still sticky and wet in places. I thought I could see a way around the sown field, which would lead to the assumed trackway between the stones, and although we walked this way, it turned out to be horribly muddy, and there was no trackway between the stones after all, just a row of marker plates and stones!

However, after a long detour, got to the western stone, which is not much more than a metre in height, and took some pictures. There are other bits of stone here, which may have been broken from the menhir, or maybe just field clearance, or perhaps even remains of other broken stones (I believe that four were recorded in 1912).

Not a particularly exciting visit, but nice to have got there. No way of getting to the western stone today from here, so thats one for the future. Back to the car straight across the ploughed field along some tractor wheel marks was much simpler than around the edges, and no muddier.
