A lovely rectangular (box shaped) dolmen nestled in the trees at the top of a field. Visible (just) in winter from the road from Grezes to Brengues, close to the track that leads to Fourques Basses.
The dolmen was excavated and restored by Jean Clottes in 1965. Who discovered that the dolmen had been previously excavated several times. Some Chalcolithic material was recovered, along with MBA pottery...it appears the original contents were all but removed in the MBA, then the site was excavated again both in the Roman and later periods. (See Clottes magnificent volume in the series Inventory des Megalithes de France - Vol 5, Clottes 1977)
The capstone measures 4.30m x 2.40m x 0.55m but may have been a lot larger, if the block that lies just behind the dolmen was once actually once part of it, as is thought probable by the excavator. The dolmen faces 139°.
The tumulus which measures about 14m in diameter, is cut on its western side by a drystone wall, against which a further build up of debris (either from the excavations or of rocks cleared from the field) is notable on the southern side.
The dolmen lies on private land and is not accessible from public paths.
