A fine dolmen in a very prominent position overlooking the valley of the Célé.
The capstone measures 3.30m x 2.5m x 0.55m. The extensively ploughed out tumulus means that only the stones themselves remain. The entrance faces 110°.
The entrance to the dolmen has a small drystone wall built to one side...it was used to house a few sheep at sometime and may also have doubled as a "cazelle" (shepherds hut) in the past and more recently as a hunters hide.
The back (NW) wall also features a drystone construction. To the exterior of the dolmen this hides the endstone completely from view. Once inside a fine endstone can be seen with more drystone walling filling most of the gap between it and the capstone.
The floor of the dolmen seems to have been atleast partially paved, but this may not be contemporary with the construction itself. As the site has evidently been excavated, the paving may well be of much later in date than the dolmen..similar paving though is known elsewhere on the causse, in primary contexts.
The capstone itself is quite weathered and has a rather domed appearance, in part due to the weathering but also because some stones have been deliberately placed on top adding to the effect. This gives it a similar look to the dolmen of Verdier Petit at Durbans..where many stones have been placed on top of the dolmen.
The dolmen at Fourques Hautes is on private land and inaccessible from public footpaths...standing as it does in the middle of a cultivated field.
