Cave in Derbyshire

An interesting and accessible cave in Deep Dale, the cave has a wide opening which narrows into a pot hole. Hob is a local name of a goblin who is said to have made everything on the farm be successful and indeed stuff left at the cave would be mended. but if annoyed milk turned sour, and panic ensued. A charm used in this district stated "Churn, butter, churn! Peter stands at our gate, Waiting for a butter-cake! Churn, butter, churn!"

Indeed Deep Dale was was noted for fairies and once a work man caught one and put it in his bag but it screamed so much he let it go.Of the cave an article in 1890 reads: "At the further end of the chamber there was a hole in the stalagmite floor .... After passing through this aperture there was a drop of 6 feet, which leads to a chamber 17 feet long, 3-5 feet wide and 6 feet high. They came to another chamber...whence they passed to another chamber. To the right there was a passage.... At the end of this passage they crawled through a small hole whence they dropped...into another chamber 40 feet long.. The floor was level...at the end of which there was a passage along the bed of which, in wet weather, ran a small stream. The following week they could see there was another long chamber below...."

The site is certainly evocative but I would advise against further exploration based on above. Romano-British Brooches and burials have been found at the site, but it is not clear whether this is a domestic site or a metal working site with seasonal occupation.

Isn't this Thirst House Cave in Deepdale (NGR 0970 7124)? This is often confused with Hobs Hurst Cave which is in nearby Monsal Dale (NGR 176 712) (See Caves of the Peak District, Gill & Beck 1991 pp 54 & 242).

You are correct. Also, 19th-century descriptions of caves are notoriously exaggerated and unreliable. The current entry in Caves of the Peak District (2010) reads "A large entrance 15ft (4.5m) high and 20ft (6m) wide. Height soon drops to 6ft (2m) and after 72 ft (22m) the floor descends to a second chamber. Hole in floor among boulders descends to a short crawl and a rift with a pool below."
