Whirley Pool
Whirley Pool submitted by xseawitch : The whirley pool bubbles continuously, the water is clear and shallow, a lovely peaceful place (Vote or comment on this photo)
This site is an interesting potential ancient watering hole. It is now a pool surrounded by alder trees with a constant bubbling action. Before the railway tapped its water in the 1880s, the water was so powerful that it sent jets of water into the air.

A site certainly used by Birdcombe Mesolithic period as a bronze torche was found nearby, its supplementary name of Roman Swimming pool is perhaps not so easily explained.

Note: An analysis of the rather mysterious CO2-rich gas that bubbles from Whirley Pool - could this odd phenomena have highlighted it as a special place back to prehistoric times?

Whirley Pool gas analysis by Anonymous on Saturday, 10 December 2016
This. URL may be of interest

This pond in the south-west Corner of Towerhouse Wood (ST473717), near Nailsea, North Somerset, owned by The Woodland Trust, produces bubbles of gas in large quantities, though it appears that nobody had hitherto tried to find out the nature of the gas, or proposed any explanation for its formation here. This article by Terry Smith from 2001 describes the results of sampling and analysis of the gas.
