Earthwork in Yorkshire (North). Cobers Laithe Camp an ancient earthwork lies about 3 miles north-east of Paythorne - just off a country lane half a mile east of the hamlet of Nappa. Just up the lane is Ash Tree farm. The site is located in a farmers field by a footpath. But at ground level it is difficult to make out and you will need to walk around the site until its outline becomes visible.
Not a great deal is known about the earthwork but roughly it is rectangular shaped and measures about 100x150 feet. The northern and western sides of the earthwork have a slight ditch, whereas the southern side has a low rampart of sorts. Much erosion has taken place and farming has obviously damaged the earthwork.
The camp or settlement probably dates from the Iron Age, though it may have been inhabited in the Roman period as well. The site does not appear to have been excavated. However, at nearby Castle Haugh there is a Bronze-Age barrow where several collared, earthenware urns were dug-up, and just north of Park House, Paythorne, two Bronze-Age axeheads were found.
This site is recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 45526, which says this is the ill-defined remains of a banked, ditched, non-defensive enclosure, likely to be an pastoral enclosure (for sheep or cattle) of Iron Age date.
The Journal of Antiquities also includes an entry for the Cobers Laithe Earthwork, Swinden, Near Nappa, North Yorkshire, which includes photographs, a description, background information and a discussion as to its age and use, and a list of reference sources for more information.
