Massive chambered tomb with attached stone circles in Sardinia (Sardegna)

This huge complex comprises a large tomb with forecourt and large stone circles attached to it. Built of granite blocks, the site has the usual horned forecourt but in this case it is extended to a full circle in front of the site. There is a 26 metre long chamber partially dug into the ground and with a trapezoidal cross section. Further stone circles are attached to the side of the chamber. Excavations in 1981 yielded Middle Bronze Age Nuragic finds dating to the 14th century BC which included six intact vessels and numerous pot sherds. The vessels had twin handles and a flat inner lip. Other finds included glass bead necklaces. The site is located on a small road which runs from just north of Gonnosfanadiga to Arbus. Travelling north from Gonnosfanadiga towards Guspini (shown as the SS196 on Michelin Maps and Google Maps but as the SS126 elswhere) at the first crossroads turn left and then soon right towards Arbus. 2.5 kilometres down this road there is a turning to a quarry on the left. Take this but keep right and, ignoring other turns to the left, keep on this rough earthen lane to reach the site after around 650 metres.

San Cosimo Tomba di Giganti
San Cosimo Tomba di Giganti submitted by DrewParsons : Interestingly there is a twin aperture into the chamber. I am unaware of any intention to create a light box as seen at Carrowkeel in Ireland as the upper opening is too large. October 2010. (Vote or comment on this photo)
