Stone Avenue in Wiltshire. The West Kennet Avenue runs for an incredible 2.5km. Some burials have been found at the bottom of some of the stones. Aubrey Burl suggests that avenues such as this were built in stretches, over the years, by different generations of the population.

There is likely male / female imagery in many of the stone shapes, and their arrangement in relation to one another is probably significant.

Wanton destruction along West Kennet Avenue! ShropshireTraveller's photo of a snail at Avebury aroused my suspicions, and a walk along the Avenue this weekend seemed to confirm them. Although most of his/her accomplices were skulking at ground level, this brazen lithovore was still munching away in broad daylight. It is unclear whether the snails are directly eating the rock surface for their

In the foreground on the left is stone 14a, a small squat 'type B' stone. A little further away on the right is a tall 'masculine' pillar on the west side of the avenue (stone 15b). This photo is a composite of two photos with shallow depth of field to try and give a greater depth of field.

This Kennet Avenue stone (number 4b) is the nearest to Avebury henge, next to the gate on the road. The first standing paired stones are some way off up the hill.

This is stone 13b, on the west side of the avenue. This is a side view of the stone, one of the 'female' lozenges. It is one of the first pair of stones standing in the Kennet Avenue as you go towards the Sanctuary from the southern entrance of Avebury henge. These stones were re-erected by Alexander Keiller.
