One of the many Giant's Tombs located across Sardinia and dating from the Nuragic Age 1600 - 1200 BC. The burial chamber is accessed through the huge doorway stone with its small opening at the base. Originally the burial chamber would have been covered by stone slabs and then a cairn of small stones and earth but these were removed and used in the building of the dry stone walls around the area in 1918. There is the usual semi circular area in front of the site somewhat akin to the Irish Court Tombs. Quartz is evident in the stones used to build the site too, a broad seam running through the door stone. Unlike many other similar sites there are no carved outlines on the stele which forms the entrance to the tomb. Excavations here have yielded pot sherds that have been dated to between the 15th and 11th centuries BC.
To reach the site take the S133 from Arzachena towards Santa Teresa Gallura and around a couple of kilometres after the turn for Palau look out for the "Vecchia Gallura" Restaurant on the left side. Turn left (south) here with the site signposted. Wend your way uphill and eventually reach a signpost pointing right and into a paddock. The last 300 metres is unsurfaced but easily drivable. Take the left fork (the right one leads to a church) and the gate to the site is straight ahead. The views from the site towards the mountains are stupendous!! Interestingly locals believe that this site has curative powers and there is a chart showing where the best location is to absorb these benefits. Some joker had added "Don't wear pacemakers" to the site sign. I waited while an infirm local sat there for 5 minutes until I could get a photo of the site.
