Ancient Cross in Lancashire

The Burnley Cross, Lancashire. The so-called Burnley Cross stand in a small well-kept garden with a wall and railings around it, at the junction of two busy roads at the N side of the old Burnley grammar school, Colne Road. The Prestige complex is just opposite. The cross is roughly 7 foot high, very worn, blackened and grimy from centuries of weather and Lancashire chimney smoke.

The cross shaft gradually tapers towards the top where, sadly a broken cross-head, is all that is left, but a little of the carving survives on the head. The shaft is now without any carvings at all. At the bottom there is a square-shaped base which may be of a later date. It is probably Anglian and dates from the 10th-11th century CE, similar to the crosses at Whalley. Some local historians have claimed it to be one of The Paulinus Crosses, but this seems unlikely.

Also in the little garden there is a round shaped stone monument on a base, but I don't know anything more about it though it looks like a giant flower pot. It is probably more recent in date to the cross. Just down the road is St Peter's parish church, beside the River Brun. It's worth having a look round the church.

The cross is recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 45368 and scheduled as Historic England List ID 1022617. The HE entry describes the cross as being "in the garden of Burnley College Adult Education Centre, Bank Parade." The Journal of Antiquities also features a page for this cross - see their entry for The Burnley Cross, Burnley, Lancashire, which includes directions for finding the site, together with a description, a photograph, background history and details of the nearby Shorey Well.

The Burnley Cross
The Burnley Cross submitted by Sunny100 : The odd-shaped stone monument standing in the little garden near the Burnley Cross. It resembles a very large plant pot. But it probably dates from more recent times - although I don't have any more details regarding this curiousity. (Vote or comment on this photo)

I presume you are referring to the old Grammar School next to the cross NorthernerInLondon. One or two strange things happened in that school in believe in the distant past.
