Jennet's Well/Spring
Jennet's Well/Spring submitted by Sunny100 : Jennet's Well/Spring at Keighley, W.Yorks. SE.047419. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Holy Well in Yorkshire (West). Jennet's Well/Spring at Keighley, W.Yorks. SE 0461 4180. This particular well is rather an odd one to say the least. It stands at the side of a private house, nearly opposite the small Calversyke reservoir at Black Hill to the W of Keighley, at the western end of Shann Lane.

According to the legend, a St Jennet dwelt here back in Saxon times. She was apparently, later, made tutelary saint of a church in Keighley, but no record of a St Jennet exists today - so she/he is one of those obscure saints lost in the mists of time. So it would seem the well is a christianized spring. The well has also been associated with fairies in times gone by.

The spring flows into a square basin-like structure and then down along a stone gulley; it then goes underground and probably runs on into the reservoir nearby. It obviously pre-dates the house by many hundreds of years, but may have been used as a source of water by the occupants and others close-by. If you are going to look at the well or take photos there [please respect the privacy of the occupants of the house]. There are two other holy wells in this area: True Well and Goff Well.

The Northern Antiquarian (TNA)>/b> also feature a page for this site - see their entry for Jennet’s Well, Keighley, West Yorkshire which gives us directions for finding the well together with a photograph, a brief archaeology & history and local folklore. The Journal of Antiquities also includes a page for Jennet’s Well, Calversyke, Keighley, West Yorkshire, which includes photographs, background information, a description of the well and the use of its waters, and a list of reference sources for more information.

The well basin is square-shaped with a downward opening allowing the water to flow down onto depression in the ground and then underground via a modern-day grid. The stone basin appears to have some carvings on it.

Jennet's Well/Spring
Jennet's Well/Spring submitted by Sunny100 : Jennet's Well/Spring stands beside a house on Shann Lane, Black Hill, near Keighley. It may date back to Saxon times, but in more recent centuries it apparently was used as a water supply in the locality.
